After the Puget Sound Educational Service District released its review of the Instructional Support Services offered by the Bainbridge Island School District to special needs students, BISD is reaching out to parents and guardians for feedback.

The review was critical of some key aspects of ISS at BISD, including inconsistent and low-tech recordkeeping and data collection, lack of leadership and communication, staff misconceptions, and overly high standards. At the last BISD School Board meeting, PSESD presented some of the review findings and recommendations. During public comment, some people expressed concern about what would happen with the PSESD recommendations and how parents and guardians would be involved in the process of taking responsive actions to the review.

The Instructional Support Services Review Committee (ISSRC) subcommittee on special education includes parents, but the membership has decided to directly solicit community feedback regarding the focus areas for its work this year. In an e-mail sent to the school community, the ISSRC wrote, “While we have parent representation on this committee, it is important that everyone has a chance to voice his or her opinion.”

To that end, the ISSRC has scheduled a meeting for October 14 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Bainbridge Island School District Board Room. Organizers say, “This meeting will follow a structured, interactive format in solicitation of your opinions. The purpose of this meeting will be to seek your input into areas of concern regarding special education that you want the subcommittee to address.”

In the e-mail, the committee promises to “use this information, along with the information from the Puget Sound ESD report and input from the district special education staff, to set priority goals.”
